WorldSkills Western Region Skills Competitions Demonstrate Rising Standards in Uganda’s TVET Sector

In preparation for the National Skills Competitions, WorldSkills Federation Uganda conducted Western Region Skills Competitions at Nyamitanga Technical Institute in Mbarara city on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Skills competitions are part of the WorldSkills activities to promote Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Uganda.
The event brought together talented young competitors from various technical institutions across western region to showcase their skills, creativity, and excellence in different trades, namely: automotive mechanics, plumbing, electrical installation, renewable energy, building construction, fashion and design, cabinet making, and welding.
Winners were awarded medals as they booked a spot in the national skills competitions scheduled for February 2026.
The building construction category was topped by Arnold Asiimwe from Kibatsi Technical Institute in Ntungamo district, winning gold medal. He was followed by Michael Aheebwe from Zoora Uganda Safaris from Mbarara City, wining silver while Cryton Gumoshabe from Kyamuhunga Technical Institute in Bushenyi district came third, winning bronze.
In welding, Gerald Abenaitwe from Kibatsi Technical Institute won gold, while Susan Ninsiima and Paul Aijuka, both from Nyamitanga, came second and third, winning silver and bronze respectively.

In Automotive Mechanics, Nyamitanga Technical Institute dominated the category, producing all the top three winners – Allan Twongyeirwe, who
took gold, Saviour Nahwera, who earned silver, and Rosette Ninsiima, who claimed bronze.
In the Electrical Installation category, Godrick Nkamwesiga from Nyamitanga Technical Institute emerged top, taking the gold medal. He was followed by Anthony Muhwezi from Nyakatare Technical Institute in Kanungu District, who won silver, while Junior Begumisa, also from Nyamitanga, claimed bronze.
In the Plumbing category, Derrick Agaba from Nyamitanga Technical Institute emerged the overall winner, taking home the gold medal. He was followed by Benefit Beebare from Nyakatare Technical Institute, who earned silver, while Ashraf Agaba from Nyamitanga secured bronze.

Nyamitanga Technical Institute swept all the top three positions in the Fashion and Design category. The gold medal went to Anita Asaba, with Alicious Arinde taking silver, and Kenneth Ainomucunguzi winning bronze.
In Cabinet Making, Edgar Mwebaze from Nyamitanga Technical Institute clinched the gold medal, followed by Ken Okello from Kibatsi Technical Institute, who took silver, while Innocent Agaba from Nyamitanga earned bronze.
The Renewable Energy category was led by Albert Twesigye from Nyamitanga Technical Institute, who won gold. He was followed by Maxima Nayebare from Kyamuhunga Technical Institute with silver, and Jacob Kakuru from Nyamitanga, who claimed bronze.
WorldSkills competitions serve as a platform to inspire young people’s participation in skills development and to demonstrate the growing potential of technical and vocational education in shaping Uganda’s workforce.

All the top three contenders in each trade advanced to the National Skills Competitions, where they will compete with their peers from other regions across the country. Winners at the national level advance to compete in the WorldSkills International Competitions.
At the international stage, Uganda’s competitors will compete and benchmark their skills against competitors from around the world, gaining exposure, experience, and inspiration to raise the standards of skills excellence back home.
WorldSkills competitions play a pivotal role in advancing skills development, equip young people with market-relevant skills that improve their job readiness and competitiveness in both local and international labour markets, strengthen technical and vocational institutions, foster innovation and productivity, encourage collaboration and partnerships, and provide a platform for Ugandan youth to represent the country on continental and global stages
