About US

WorldSkills Uganda is the national hub for promoting vocational education and training in the country. Our work revolves around promoting Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Uganda through skills competitions.

We rely on the synergy and support from partners who are great allies by sharing the same vision and being persistent in our collective effort and actions.

Through national and international cooperation and development between industry, government, organizations, and institutions, we promote the benefits of and need for skilled professionals through grass-roots community projects, skills competitions and knowledge exchange.

Since 2019, WorldSkills Uganda is an associate member of WorldSkills International (WSI) – an organization which focuses on raising the profile and recognition of skilled people, and showing how important skills are in achieving economic growth in the country.

Background

The Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Policy approved by cabinet in January 2019 presents an employer-led TVET system that is responsive to the labor market demands. This is a great opportunity for young people to acquire employability skills. However, for so long, young people and the bigger population have shunned vocational education.

WorldSkills is an organization which focuses on raising the profile and recognition of skilled people, and showing how important skills are in achieving economic growth. They do this by organizing competitions like the WorldSkills Competitions, and through various promotions.

In a bid to improve the percepion of people regarding TVET and increase the quality of training delivery, government through the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) in collaboration with partners introduced an Annual National Skills Competitions Programme.

This was officially launched by The First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, on October 12, 2018 at Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), Lugogo. These competitions are modeled on the WorldSkills International (WSI) competitions that are held every two years globally.

Thereafter, Uganda participated for the first time in the WorldSkills-Kigali Africa regional competitions in November 2018 in which we got three medals.

In 2019, government established WorldSkills Uganda and in the same year, Uganda was admitted as a member of WorldSkills International during the assembly held in August in Kazan – Russia.
