Participation in WorldSkills Kigali Africa regional Competitions for the very first time climaxed with three medals for WorldSkills Uganda.
Together with the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Rwanda, African Union, Festo Didactic, and the support from Lincoln Electric, WorldSkills Kigali Africa 2018 was held in Kigali from 20 to 23 November 2018.
25 Competitors from Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Morocco, Uganda, and Rwanda competed in 7 skills (Mechatronics, Electrical Wiring, Welding, Plumbing, Bricklaying, Cooking, and Hairdressing). More than 1,000 students attended the Opening Ceremony and hundreds of students visited the event over the course of the competition. Rwanda is on its way to establish their first national competition by the end of 2019 and create a dedicated unit for skills competitions in the country.
This was a small-scale, yet significant, pilot for WorldSkills to test the concept of engaging key partners like the African Union, Global Partners, and governments to bring Members and non-Members together for the first continental regional competition.
