The second edition of the National Skills Competition in Uganda came to a climax with a national competition held on 3 and 4 February 2022 at Nakawa Vocational Training Institute in Kampala.
Organized by the World Skills Uganda with support from the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR II) Project in Uganda, the competition was organized to show-case and unleash the potential of young people in creativity, innovation in addition to enhancing their skills in different trades and discipline in accordance with the global occupational standards.
Categorized into different trades with students competing in Agro processing, Agro-machinery fabrication, automobile mechanics, electrical installations, clinical medicine, laboratory technology, among other areas, the competition attracted over 92 young people from 55 TVET institutions of which 55 where male and 37 females.
Lack of employment is as one of the biggest challenges affecting the youth in developing countries like Uganda and several times Government has tried to use skills training programme to equip the youth with Job creating skills.
Skills competition is one way the Government has been fighting unemployment.
The Minister of State for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo presided over the Nakawa Skills competition along the State Minister for Gender and other stakeholders
According to Minister Muyingo, the ministry of education is ready to fund young innovators to help develop their skills.
Hon. Muyingo also said the move will help improve the national level of training which will attract students from other countries. The minister and other stakeholders also inspected the works and creations at the vocational institute as different students took part in the skills competition.
