HOIMA — WorldSkills Uganda (WSU) has conducted Training of Experts in Hoima city, bringing together assessors and trainers from across the Albertine/Rwenzori region ahead of the upcoming regional skills competitions.
The training conducted on Monday and Tuesday this week, drew stakeholders from public and private Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, as well as representatives from the world of work, in a drive to strengthen the capacity of experts and promote industry-relevant skills training in the region.
Addressing the experts, WorldSkills Uganda Team Leader Jackson Kuucha outlined the core responsibilities expected of WorldSkills experts, namely preparing industry-standard test projects, and assessing competitors as per the industry standards among others.
Kuucha said competitions must be conducted in line with international industry standards, noting that competitors are being trained for the world of work and must therefore be judged against the benchmarks they will encounter in real workplaces.
He added: “skills competitions play a critical role in promoting TVET, describing it as a key pathway to employment and entrepreneurship for young people.”
According to Kuucha, surveys have shown that TVET graduates outperform their university counterparts in the world of work, with employers attributing this to the hands-on, practical skills that TVET training instils.
